Welcome ladies to the third round critiques. Here, we'll unfortunately have to say goodbye to at least one other model.
We'll start off by critiquing all of the photos this round.
Angelina - Snake
Koda: Out of all the models who have animals as their prop this round, you're one of the ones who has better interaction with your prop. I also really like your hair here. Then again, I tend to normally like your hair. It's probably my favorite trait of yours (cause I don't tend to like big lips). I do have some problems with this photo, though. You have some lines showing on your face that normally don't show. Also, this doesn't have the strongest feeling of a "modeling shoot".
Christian: I'm going to beat this dead horse and say this is not a modeling shot. This is a shot from Brad's iPhone at best.
That being said you still look pretty good. The interaction with the snake is good. There isn't too much fashion here, I mean its a tank top. I agree with whatever Asian model our host is playing as, your hair is always on point. I do like that you are not giving AJBF here, its refreshing. To me this is really a safe picture and probably the first thing you found - isn't going to win you any FCOs.
Jenna: I have to echo the sentiments of my fellow judges, with the fact that this doesn't really come off as a modeling shot to me either. I like how you're interacting with the Snake, and how you look fearless while doing so. I think it's nice how dressed down you are, yet your natural beauty still comes through. I don't care for the glare coming in from the right side of the photo, but it's not terrible. Overall, I think this is nice, but I'm not totally blown away.
Jensen: I had to google this to make sure it was a real photo shoot because it looks candid. I love your hair here and your mouth. The interaction with the snake is good as well. Just need to always be modeling.
Portia: I think you look forgives here like always and I love how you chose a snake as your prop. I do agree with Koda that it doesn't really come off as a modeling shot..it reminds me of a picture a friend is may have took to put on Instagram. I still like this though, good job
Cate - Elephant
Koda: This shot's a bit strange, but overall, I like it. I love your posing and that dress is fantastic. It's mainly strange cause you feel to out of place. You're interacting with your prop, so you've met the requirements for the theme. If I do have one comment on something to show us in the future, I'd like to see a front-facing shot from you. You've given us a profile, a 3/4 turn, and a profile, so it would be nice to see a straight-on shot to really establish the different points of your face. Don't force it and submit a subpar shot just to meet this, but I did want to point it out as something to keep in mind.
Christian: Cate, you have found a photo that suits your strange and playful personality that's for sure. I am struggling with why when the assignment was props everyone chose animals. Animals are not props they are focus stealers, especially in the case of a giant elephant. I think your dress is killer and you look fantastic in this shot. The image is not in proportion and you have stretched it which really hurts the overall aesthetic for me. I'm also going to agree with Hoda Kotb in that we have yet to see your face full on. Its all feeling a bit similar now. I want you to surprise me...and soon.
Jenna: I like this, as well. It seems like it looks a bit stretched out, like the proportions skew the look of the photo, to me. Other than that, though, I think it works well. I like how your bright skin complexion really pops against all the dark in the shot. I also like how you are interacting with the Elephant, and how you don't get lost in the photo. Nice work!
Jensen: This is almost perfect. Your face is just not really good for me here. Maybe it's the open mouth, I don't know. Your pose, fashion, beauty, it's all amazing. I love how you're interacting with the elephant. Very freaking good Cate!
Portia: Cate! I really like this!!! I like how your animal is very unique and I love your dress!!! My only negative is that they elephant may out shine you a bit but overall I really really like this!
Cher - Crook & Flail
Koda: Ok, so the quality is off, which is to be expected since this is an older shot, but to keep it fair, I have to hold you to the same standards as everyone else. Your face is also a little odd and off-putting this time. However, I love the outfit, the pose is great, I love that you took a different and unexpected route with your choice in props, and this is definitely a different photo. The positives definitely outweigh the negatives this round.
Christian: Headdress? Check.
Egyptian? Check.
Muff hair? Check.
Corn rows? Check.
I mean yeah the quality is way off, but I am going to give you points alone for not copping out with an animal. You take risks and I appreciate that a lot. Cher you are growing on me. Like a lesion...a sassy septuagenerian lesion.
Jenna: I do think this is different, and I like it for that, as well. I think you look great and your strength really shines in this photo. The costume stands out well, and I like your pose. Solid effort, Cher.
Jensen: This is extremely awesome!! I love the whole vibe of this photo. You look Fierce with a capital F and you are modeling so well. Bravo Miss Cher!
Portia: What I like about this is that it's very very unique! Unique earns big bonus points with me. Unfortunately unlike some of the other judges quality is really important to me as well. I do get that this is am older photo so I'll be a little lenient there. You're rubbing off on me Cher I like it
Christina - Binoculars
Koda: I feel like this is the most glamorous shot this round; a bit reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe. The hair is fantastic, your lips really pop and you're styled and accessorized very well. Your eyes bug me a bit here, but I see them as being appropriate for the action of your shot. I don't feel it's a perfect shot, but it's pretty damn close and a huge improvement over your shot from last round.
Christian: It must be snowing in hell, because I am falling in love with XTina.
This shot is damn near flawless. Fierce fashion, fierce hair, fierce makeup. It's a FIERCE-FECTAâ„¢.
You are one of the only ones to actually use a prop and use it correctly. I love everything about it. Well done madam.
Jenna: I think that this is beautiful! I love your hair, and your dark red lips. I think your accessories are exquisite, and altogether I think that the styling of this shot is excellent. I like how you're holding your prop, and it is well displayed. Very nice job, Christina.
Jensen: This is awesome. I'm not loving the squinted eyes, but other than that, amazing!
Portia: You have shown to be very consistent through this competition. I had no idea Christina has this great of a portfolio. There's not tons to say about this but that's it's really good. I'm not sure how I feel about you squinting your eyes though!
Delta - Chair
Koda: Yeah, the quality is a little bit off here, but I've seen worse. I wasn't really hoping to see any chair shots this round unless they were done in a really creative way. I do like your angle here and your dress is nice, but in the end, there's nothing I find really special or memorable here.
Christian: So I have lots of problems Delta Dawn.
Biggest one, is Connie Chung specifically warned against using a chair, and you kind of ignored her and said "well this is all I can find". Upon a quick Google I found several options including microphone and piano. Not to mention this isn't even the best chair shot in your portfolio, and this isn't the best quality of THIS photo even. It just seems like a pretty lackluster outing. You are pretty yes, but not all models are pretty.
You're in trouble.
Jenna: First off, the quality of this is a bit off. Beside that, I like your tousled hair, and flirty expression. I also really like the color of your dress. I do wish you were interacting with your prop a bit more, but I like your pose, and I think it helps the chair and you stand out and set this photo apart from what it could look like on a standard level. Decent work here, Delta.
Jensen: I won't bitch about quality since someone else's quality wasn't perfect either. I like your angle as well. I'm just not sure pretty and catologue is going to get you much further.
Portia: I do like DELTA in this shot but I don't know how I feel about the use of the prop. Koda warned the models about using chairs and even though you're not sitting on it, I wish we would have seen something more risky. This is so so for me
Emma - Miniature Ponies
Christian: YES!
I love everything about this. It's unique, playful, hilarious and fashion forward. I even love the 80's valley girl hair - the whole package works really really well together. Girl if this is drunk submitting...drink on.
Koda: The image size is slightly too large for my taste, but since I don't need to scroll to see all of you and the part that is cut off of my screen is completely incidental, I don't really care in this instance. Outdoor shots like this can be tough since the natural lighting is sometimes not the most flattering light for more high end shots like this one. I don't really mind it too much. Your fashion is great, I like the action pose, and you're interacting with your prop well. A nearly perfect image, to me.
Jensen: I have nothing negative to say here. This is one of my favourite photos of you. It's high fashion and brilliant. I love the modeling and I love your props.
Jenna: I think that this shot is excellent. I love your setting, and how you are leading the ponies, making you the focal point. I love your expression and your outfit. I also really like how vibrant the various colors are. There isn't anything bad I can say here. This is awesome. Great work, Emma!!
Portia: Ahhhh I'm so glad you chose this shot of Emma! I love love it! This is definitely my favorite shot I've seen this far. Unique props and you outshine them with your high fashion. Love.
Jennifer - Bird
Koda: I definitely like how your prop adds a nice pop of color to your otherwise fairly monochromatic photo. I love the fashion on display here (even if it makes you look kinda dirty). You have some nice posing, but I do wish we got to see more neck here. It'll be interesting to see how this stacks up against the other bird photos we're seeing this round.
Christian: This is interesting for me. I love and hate at the same time. I love that our host, Julie Chen, had to say "let's see how it stacks up against the other bird photos" that's pure insanity to me. I think your fashion is great here. It's almost TOO transformative. I barely see JLaw in there. The bird offers a nice pop of color - is it a Mockingjay? No it isn't. Pity.
I actually like the monochromatic thing a lot. I am going to tell you what I have told everyone else - I don't think animals are props I think they are distractions, and since the bird is the only pop of color my eye goes there first. Upstaged by a bird. Not the best news but not the worst .
Jenna: There are things here I like, and some I don't. Firstly, I like your pose and how you're holding up the bird. I also like the pop of color that the bird gives to this photo, as well. I don't care for how neutral the colors here are, from your skin tone, to the background, to your outfit. Also, I feel as if the feathers in your outfit seem to be swallowing you up. Altogether, this isn't terrible, and there are most certainly things I like, but it's not a knockout for me.
Jensen: I really like your pose here. And your outfit. It's very modelesque and high fashion. Your face looks a bit washed out, could be all the light colours in the photo. I actually wasn't sure what your prop was at first because the bird is quite small lol I know the colours are "bright" but they're faded. Overall, not bad.
Portia: Jlaw!! Work itttt! I love this! I just got don't telling someone their may be my favorite this round but now I see this and it's gonna be hard! You look amazing here from your pose face and to your outfit. Well done
Kirsten - Dishes
Koda: I'm very torn about this shot. You look kinda drab here, but that's definitely on purpose and done to tell a story, so it actually makes me like it. I like your top, but love the detail of the flower sleeve. You have some interaction with your prop, but it could have been a bit stronger. There's something about this shot that makes me think of Alice in Wonderland. Overall, I'm fairly fond of this shot.
Christian: OK first the positives...
You used a prop not an animal.
I am afraid that's the end of our positive portion.
I really don't know what is happening here. It's like I am taking crazy pills. Your hands and arms are severely non-human. Something is really wrong or I ate the wrong porcini mushrooms. Your face looks a little off too. When judges say they are torn it means they hate it but want to say something nice. I'm not torn.
Jenna: I actually like this. I think your prop is prominently displayed and I like the styling in this photo, a lot. I like your makeup, and how is makes you look like a character. I also really like your outfit. I think it gives a fun personality to an otherwise plain setting. I wish your expression had a bit more life to it, but I think this is a job very well done, Kirsten.
Jensen: This looks like a model picture. Sometimes models look ugly/crazy/etc.... And you've got it. I'm not loving the expression, but the rest is pretty good. And your prop is front and center and obvious.
Portia: I am just not feeling this at all. Something doesn't look proportional with your body. Your hands and face look so big. And I don't like your facial expression. You did so well last round I'm a little disappointed this time
Milla - Guitar
Koda: I think the lackluster response you're getting this round is due in large part to you setting the bar so high for yourself already. My initial reaction to this shot wasn't very positive, but when I took a step back to think about it, I think it's still a solid shot. The fashion's a little plain, but you have some nice posing, understated makeup that's still done really well, and I actually like the placement of your guitar. Seems very appropriate for a shoot where your character is a musician. It's a good photo. You've just set the bar really high for yourself, so that's why we're not as excited this round (but I'm sure you'll do fine).
Christian: Milla you continue to take big risks. Just because this wasn't the OTT we are used to THAT makes it a big risk. I appreciate that you showed some versatility here and showed us that you aren't all avant garde and bizarro every time. This goes a long way to showing me you are a versatile model.
That being said, I feel like this shot is captured from the set of a late 90's Meatloaf video. It's a bit too oddly retro and not in a fun way. You took a risk and actually used a prop so I will reward you for that, but know that if this was week 1, you'd probably be in trouble.
Jenna: This is a bit on the plain side. You're holding the guitar, but it seems as if it's an afterthought, as it's just there. Your expression really leaves a lot to be desired here. It just looks too blank, and as if you're bored. I don't think your outfit is terrible given what you're working with, but I wish there was more here to blow me away.
Jensen: I like variety, so it's nice to see you go a different route. I love your body, you're sexy. And the guitar is there. And not an animal <3
Portia: When you show skin it's a risk but you have a good body and I like your facial expression. I love the guitar but the background is a bit plain. You didn't necessarily wow me like last round but this is still okay!
Rihanna - Toy Horse
Koda: Welcome back, Rihanna. You've definitely bounced back from the bottom with this shot. You're giving us a very severe and striking line that I like here. I had trouble finding your other leg at first, but now I see where it is and it makes sense that it's there cause you needed to do something to balance yourself like that. The fact that this is in black and white only enhances the photo since I think it loses some visual impact when I imagine it in color. Overall, a really nice shot this round.
Christian: She's back!
Black and white really helped you here. I think you look flawless, fierce and ready to go. I absolutely love the weirdness of this shot and I think it totally works with Rihanna. This is back in the camp of what I want to see more from you.
My only nit, is your hair/face combo looks a bit Bride of Frankenstein darling. Mwaaaaaaah.
Jenna: This is outstanding, Rihanna! I also like the Black and White and I think you look very edgy here. I love your outfit, and makeup. It really brings this shot together. I also think the prop you chose was unique and I like how you're posing on it. Excellent work!
Jensen: Finally!! I love this. I love the lines you're making with your body. The complete modelesque of your body. It's high fashion and edgy and everything works wonderfully!! Great job!
Portia: Yesss! This has to be one of my favorites. I love the black and white it totally fits this shot. You look fierce and the pose and prop is so unique. This is the Rihanna we saw from round 1, good job!
Zhang - Bird
Koda: I've come and looked at this shot multiple times since you've submitted it and every time I remember the shot, I always remember it in color for some reason. This is one of the few times where I don't agree with the black and white aspect of the photo since I feel it would pop more in color. However, you're very well put-together, you have a great pose, and the placement of the bird is cute.
Jensen: This is the best model picture of the bunch. You are modeling to a freaking T! But I had no clue what your prop was because I actually thought that was a corsage at first lol Your quality is totally fine on my computer. Like I said, best modeling picture of the bunch, just not great theme wise.
Jenna: You look very elegant here. I like the Black and White, as I think it works well for your look. I like your hair, and your dress is very sophisticated. I like your jewels and your pose, as well. The one thing I don't like is how lost your prop gets in this shot. I wish that the bird stood out more, but since there is little else in the photo, I think it add a nice touch, I just wish it was a bit more part of the focus.
Portia: At first I didn't see the prop! But that's because my eyes went straight to you which is also good. I find this shot a little plain. Since the prop is small I wish more would be going on in the shot. You should still be okay this round but I'd like to see more from you!
Christian: No.
I just feel like this was a cop out. I mean the bird is barely even there. The whole point was props. I have looked at your portfolio online, you had plenty. OK, I will move past my anger now.
Even if you had a prop, I am pretty underwhelmed by this shot. B/W hurts you here because it makes it even plainer feeling. If the dress were a rich color at least that could have given some visual interest. I also feel like the quality is off. Overall you come off very Mother of the Bride here. And MOBs aren't winning any awards any time soon.
We'll start off by critiquing all of the photos this round.
Angelina - Snake
Koda: Out of all the models who have animals as their prop this round, you're one of the ones who has better interaction with your prop. I also really like your hair here.
