Welcome ladies to the ninth round critiques. This round, we wanted you to represent the various decades.
Let's see how you all did.
Cate - 70s
Koda: Grease may have been set in the 50s, but it was released in the 70s and if you're referencing the actress at the height of her popularity, that would hit the decade you've named here. That said, I think we could have done with a bit more description here since it's not the strongest connection, for me. That said, I do tend to be attracted to darker shoots and I like that you're giving us a good level of modeling with the pose. However, the photo stops before it becomes a stunner. Solid shot and while I'm not as sold on the theme, it's still present.
Christian: Sorry, I'm just off a plane from Milan...
DOING FASHION.
I agree with my fellow judges. You definitely got the 70's vibe here, but its a bit too dark. The 70's were a time of big, flashy fashion and while you do nail the time aspect I think that you are definitely depicting a very dark side. The lighting isn't doing you any favors and your makeup is making you look very Babs Streisand, Star is Born.
All in all this is not your best Ms. Blanchett, not in any decade.
Jenna: I am going to agree with my fellow judges here. I do like this though, the silhouette you're creating is very nice. I also think your outfit, and hair fit well with what you're displaying. I like your pose and how it's creating lovely lines. Altogether, I think that this is a solid effort, Cate.
Jensen: I like this Cate. It's elegant and lovely and artistic. The outfit, hair and smoke say Olivia Newton John to me (lucky for you, Grease is my all time favourite movie) The shadows are a bit too much because they're hiding so much of your face. It's a good job though.
I just realized that this is so Olivia in Grease and Grease is set in '59. I'm going to have to do some thinking about this shot and try to connect it with the 70s now.
Portia: I was actually thinking the exact same thing when I looked at this. It feels earlier than the 70s. Your just a decade off. If it would have been the 60s I would have said this is absolutely perfect! I still think you did okay just a little error there.
Emma - 50s
Koda: This shot definitely meets all of your thematic needs. The setting is appropriate and your styling is great. Even though I think the all-black motif doesn't fully fit, the actual clothing itself does. You have a great jacket and I love the poodle skirt. Overall, a really strong shot this round.
Christian: Emma darling I'm back.
I'm sorry I left you to these she-wolves, plus Koda.
You nailed your theme. You nailed your fashion. You whiffed on your face. Girl, nobody was THIS bored in the 50's. Sexual repression, race relations, dancing. Come on now. Get out from that diner counter and conjure up a smile spell. The bored nature makes you look slumped and doesn't do justice to your rockin' bod.
But. You nailed the assignment. Kudos.
Jenna: I think that this is great, Emma. You look like you've been plucked right out of Grease. The styling here is excellent and I love that you're sitting at the counter of a diner. It helps to enhance the experience of the photo. Your expression looks a bit bored, but that aside, you hit the theme well. Great job.
Jensen: This is cute. I love the styling and the setting. Very 50s. I'm not loving your expression though. Ohhhh I love the phone in the background. The jacket reminds me of the Pink Ladies from Grease. Good job.
Portia: I really like this Emma. I agree with Jensen that you look like a Pink Lady from Grease! I think you did really well representing your decade here. I don't see anything wrong with your expression and the over all vibe of this shot is great. Well done
Jennifer - 80s
Koda: I have to agree with Jensen that you touched on points that are the 80s, but haven't fully encapsulated it. The colors work, but the styling itself looks like a mash-up of the 80s and 90s. Your face looks a little wonky to me, too. The left side (our right, your left) looks a little more puffy than normal. The posing is fine and your quality is better than it has been in several shots in the past, so it's not without its merits.
Christian: JLAW80s.
I am going to have to disagree with my fellow judges a tad here. There are cliche cartoony 80's and there are every other part of the 80's. Yes you are perhaps not screaming the big teased out cartoony mall hair and neon colors as much - BUT - you are clearly a late 80's glam here.
That being said.
I don't love this. I agree with Asia Minor, you're face is a bit wonky here and it looks like a late 80's Metamucil add. This is not your strongest outing. Though I love the modified purple top that shows off J's LAWS. Go on girl, rock dem titties.
Jenna: I like this a lot, Jennifer. I like the sultry pose and expression you're giving us here. I also like the bright colors you're showcasing in your outfit. I think they work well. Your accessorizing really helps to drive the theme home here, and gives the shot an extra pop. Nice work, overall.
Jensen: The outfit itself feels 90s but I can take it for 80s as well since we were a decade of bright bright colours. Your hair isn't big enough but it works. The big giant belt and the big bracelet also work. Not bad Jennifer.
Portia: I think you did pretty good with what you had here. Do I wish it felt a little moreeee like the 80s..sure. But your bright colors and bling bling still work! You did well and you should be okay this round!
Kirsten - 20s
Koda: This definitely feels very 20s to me, so you have the theme there. Unfortunately, I feel it was a bit at the expense of the modeling. Your lack of neck is probably the biggest problem. The posing is fine, but a bit pedestrian. I actually don't find myself having a preference between the color version or the black and white version. Each one has its own merits.
Christian: Kirsten.
Kirsten.
Kirsten.
One step forward, EIGHT steps back with this one darling. You got the fashion down, but that's about it. This background looks like an amateur power point presentation, and SEVERELY photoCHOPPED. Jensen is right, you look yellowy and jaundiced and sick.
I am not sure what else to say about this. Even the fashion is obscured because you are so wrapped up in yourself.
Hmmm. I am troubled.
Jenna: I am in the minority here when I say that I think this is beautiful. I think you embody your decade in an excellent depiction. I actually like the almost sepia tone that the photo has. It almost looks like the sun is setting on you. Your outfit is dazzling and I love your headpiece accessorizing. I think your red lip compliments you very well, and all in all, I like this shot very much.
Jensen: Oh Kirsten. I'm not sure here I absolutely love you but this photo is not working for me. It's too photo shopped looking. Your skin is so yellow Your styling and expression are 100% solid for the theme and would almost love this, but it's so fake looking. I do wish you'd done B&W because of the brightness and the skin colouring. Gosh, I want to love this, but I just can't
Portia: I do understand your representation of stars shining in the 20's and the stars in this shot. I wish you would have made this black and white to make it look more like the 20's. I also am not a huge fan of this background in this shot. Something about it just looks weird. You were doing so well the past few rounds and then this shot I am just not feeling it. I don't have too much more else to say here, except that I wish we would have saw more from you this round. I really think the background being different and maybe it being B&W could have made a huge difference.
Milla - 40s
Koda: I love that you're taking a chance here. I appreciate the reference shot since that helps tie this to your decade even more. I'm not the biggest fan of your expression here, but I do love your styling. I also encourage the use of androgyny when done appropriately. This isn't the most androgynous shot I've seen, but it is variety and I like that you are looking at your portfolio as a whole. Shows a very cerebral player. And the fact that you're accomplishing the variety while giving us a strong shot for this round is just a great touch.
Christian: MIlla. You get first in my mind for bringing up the incomparable Katherine Hepburn.
A. TREASURE.
As are you to this competition. You are flawless in this shot. From the fashion, to the styling, to the creativity and ballsiness it took for you to go this far out, with so little game left. I am impressed beyond tears.
I salute you and bow. Namaste.
Jenna: I agree that I appreciate the comparison photo, as it really helps to tie things together. Your versatility is very impressive. I think that this epitomizes exactly what you were trying to depict to us. The coloring helps to enhance what you were trying to showcase, as well. Your outfit is very plain, as is your pose, which I like. This is an outstanding representation of your decade and I like the gamble you took. Well done, Milla!
Jensen: I am so glad you showed a comparison photo and reminded me of Kate Hepburn, because I honestly was a bit blahed at first. I really love this. I liked your 60s example btw, but this is fantastic. You are just the best at variety in this competition and I'm a huge fan. You're always modeling beautifully and never afraid to test limits. Good job Milla!!!
Portia: You know what I really like about you..is that you always seem to make you shots work even when the circumstances aren't in your favor. For instance, loggin on and not having many decades to choose from and 40's being a difficult decade, you really pulled it off. I love how you showed an example of another shot and what your inspiration was. I think you did an excellent job representing the 40's! Everything from your outfit to the black and white..it all works out perfectly. I have mixed emotions on the post..part of me loves that its stiff and looks a bit candid and the the other half doesn't. But regardless you did amazing with this!!
Let's see how you all did.
