Welcome ladies to the seventhth round critiques. This round, we wanted to see some avant garde fashion.
Let's see how you all did.
Cate
Koda: I told the models not to play it safe and that outfit is anything but safe. I am in love with it. It's a shame that your more unique poses have not been well-received since I would never want to discourage posing like that. Even with a more tame posing this round, it's still there and you look good doing it. I don't mind the facial expression here since i feel it's fitting with the overall vibe of the shoot. Great work.
Christian: Cate -
This is a make or break round for you.
And I think you made it. You are right the creative posing has not helped your cause. This straight forward wonderful approach is spot on. You nailed the theme and quite frankly this is your best shot by a country mile. It's the best your skin has looked, and I love your eyes. Lady Gaga eat your heart out this is just wonderful. Granted I haven't seen everyone else yet, but you are...WORKING. IT. OUT.
Brava Lady Cate. Brava.
Jenna: Cate, I think that this is fabulous. I absolutely adore your attire and think you are giving us just the right amount of sass with you pose and expression. I feel as if the outfit and accessories are just enough, and aren't overwhelming this shot. I think that you've done great and I really like this a lot.
Jensen: I like this. I hate the background because it makes the photo feel busy, but other than that, i really like the clothing and your pose. You're being a bit overwhelmed by the outfit though, but like I said, really good.
Portia: You nailed the clothing in this shot and hit the theme well. Do I wish your facial expression was a little different, sure, but overall you did a good job!
Cher
Koda: I find this to be pretty avant garde, but not taken as far as I would have liked. I think I expected even more craziness from you this round than what we're getting, but I still love the dress for what it is. It's a nice dress with a very exaggerated feature that works for this shoot. I also love the strength of your profile here and I'm sure Jensen will die when he sees this.
Christian: Cher dahling you look beautiful here.
Unfortunately that was not the challenge...it was avant garde. This doesn't look avant garde to me as much as it just looks like "dated" fashion. My guess is that when this was shot and modeled that this was pretty mainstream. It looks very Dynasty or Falcon Crest circa mid 80's. I really expected a much crazier look from you for this week. In fact last weeks shot was more avant garde than this.
I am left feeling pretty disappointed with this shot if I am being honest.
Jenna: When I first saw this shot, I thought it was great. It looks very high-fashion and upscale, and I liked that. As I look at it now, it doesn't seem to fit the theme as much as I originally thought. I do however, think your pose is superb, and love your profile. Your outfit is not average in any way, and I love the complexity to the dress, as a whole. This is decent, overall.
Jensen: I love this. It nails the theme and you look stunning doing it. I actually don't like your profile lol SHOCKER because of the nose lol And we didn't wear any shit like that in the 80s. We were the decade of big shoulders and big hair, not stunning dresses lol
Portia: Ahhh Cher! I really like this!!! Your outfit to your pose is great here. You look so confident and you should because this is an amazing shot. One of my favorites so far
Christina
Koda: Well, the shot is definitely striking and different. I'm sitting here trying to figure out why I'm not as in love with this as the other judges seem to be and I think it's the staging that is throwing me off. Your upper-body is fantastic and seeing it makes me want more. Love the drama in your top and your hair. I would have liked it if the camera was pulled out a bit more. I feel like this had the making of being a jaw-dropping shot, but that there are missing elements in the shoot that we're not seeing in the shot.
Christian: another good week from your laying-down-but-looking-like-you're-standing series. Far be it for me to critique you though because last time I did I was accused of being inconsistent.
That being said, I like this from you a lot. Love the pretty crimp n' curl hair. I think it is great. I would have like to have seen more of the outfit to see how out there it really got, it looks a little Dangerous Liaisons which isn't necessarily avant garde as much as it is period, but I still think you did pretty well here.
Jenna: You look very alluring and evil, Christina. I love the styling here, and to me, your hair and makeup really make this shot. Your outfit is just enough outside the box, and that expression you have is excellent. Altogether, I think this is very solid. Nice work!
Jensen: I'm your biggest fan, but I'm not loving this. It's half a shot, which kind of takes away from loving a full body shot. Your eyes look freaky. The hair looks freaky. Which works for the theme. I'm just not blown away here.
Portia: Hmmm I like the style and black and white hair but I think the hair throws me off. I understand it goes with the theme but it just is a bit distracting. This is just okay for me
Emma
Koda: I appreciate that you wanted to give us a shot that still had good quality, but unfortunately, I think the theme wound up suffering for it. I see this working as kind of a High School Clique shoot where you're the theater kid. I don't really see this as avant garde. That being said, I do love how sharp the quality is around your face. The makeup pops well and it shows your pretty face well. The theme is just not there well-enough for me. You first (and hopefully last) miss of the game.
Christian: Emmykins.
I have to agree with Portia here. This is not very avant garde in my opinion. It's flapper at best. Which is just fun and Gatsby-ish. I mean when I think avant garde I go to Gaga. Fashion as wearable art - and sometimes not even wearable. This is quite wearable. In fact, it's a really good photo.
For any other shoot.
You look good, stunning even, but I don't think you met the criteria of the shoot. Sorry babe.
Jenna: I have to agree and say that this isn't elaborate enough for me either. I think you look great. I really like your off-kilter posing and your makeup is flawless. However, your outfit isn't extreme. I think the most eye-catching part of the whole thing is the head-wrap scarf you have on. This is decent, Emma, but not blowing me away.
Jensen: I agree with everyone else. You're gorgeous and I love this photo, but you didn't meet the theme at all.
Portia: This is the first submission of yours that I'm not loving right off the bat. Maybe it's because I've seen some of the others this round and like them a little more. I wish we could have seen more from you. Whether it be more of your body or more drastic of an outfit. This is just so so for me
Jennifer
Koda: I just want to start off by saying that I love your skirt; huge amounts of drama there. The bodice doesn't disappoint, either. I asked you for avant garde and that's what you gave us in the fashion. I'm not as in love with your modeling, though. I agree with the other judges in feeling you're a bit too stiff here. You gave us a strong representation of the theme, but it would have been a home run with some stronger modeling to really pull everything together.
Christian: Ah yes, your Alexander McQueen replica from Catching Fire.
I mean, yep, its avant garde. I guess I am just worried. You needed to make a big impact in this round to stay out of the bottom, which means you would go home. I am not sure you went big enough to blow us all out of the water here. I guess I just feel like I have seen a lot of JLaw Hunger Games photos from you - this might not be accurate, I'd have to go through your portfolio again. I think you used bow and arrow Katniss as well. I know that is not the fairest assessment but I wanted to see you really kill it. You look good here but Portia is right you do look a tad stiff.
I'm worried.
Jenna: At first glance, this almost looked like a runway shot, to me. That aside, I do think that this works well here. I really like you hair and makeup combo, they really compliment what's going on in this photo. Your outfit is is great. I wish there was more of a pop of color, since everything here is so neutral, but I do get a 'I'm an Ice angel and there's a storm coming' feel from the color palette, which I can appreciate. I also wish you had some sort of pose going on to help show more movement, but altogether, this is a great photo, Jennifer.
Jensen: Had this been bigger and your body not so stiff, this would have easily been my first place photo I absolutely love everything about this. So stylish, so amazing. Very good job.
Portia: I loveeee your outfit and the color scheme here! I think your face and skin look flawless. My only complaint is that you look a bit stiff here but it kind of works with the darker colors. Well done
Kirsten
Koda: That dress looks like cooled lava, but you're still erupting with fashion (that was my lame attempt to be witty). I just love that dress and I asked you to take a risk and you took one this round. I love it. Yeah, you're a little far off in the shot and it's a bit tough to see you, but I feel like this shoot, this overall impact of the shot needed to be the central focus and you delivered in that aspect. Even then, you still have some nice posing, too. I don't think you've managed to unify the judges in the past, but I'd be shocked if we're not united in loving your shot this round. Great work.
Christian: #FINALLY
This is what I have been waiting for. Yes. Yes. Yes.
I finally like Kirsten Dunst. This came at the right time missy. Yes it's a bit pulled out, but it had to be to get the shear magnitude of the outfit. I just think this knocked it way out of the park. I am super impressed with this submission and my ranking will reflect that.
Thank you. Now keep it up.
Jenna: This here is what I would call extravagant, to the max. Everything encompassed here is on such a spectacular level. Your setting is perfect, and you garbage bag gown is anything but garbage. Albeit, that we can't see you to the fullest extent, I think that this works fabulously. Excellent work, Kirsten.
Jensen: You absolutely nailed the theme. And you're modeling fantastically. I love your profile. My only issue is, you're so damn small and far away. Other than that, beyond perfect.
Portia: Wow! Oh my gosh Kirsten this is amazing!!!! You NAILED this shot. Absolutely wonderdul
Milla
Koda: You had a plan in mind and you executed it well; I could definitely see you as Panem's newest citizen. I love the fashion on display and it's definitely a fun shot. I think the reason why Christian might feel this is a bit candid it the contrast between you and the background. While the background here is incidental, I think it could have looked stronger in focus like you are. That aside, very strong shot.
Christian: Milla -
Effie Trinket indeed! J'adore Effie and j'adore Milla. I don't think the background is as balls crazy as that first shoot so you are 100% A OK in my book with all that. I think you got much closer to the avant garde thing then most models, plus you are immune, so this week was a good one to take challenges. I love your outfit. I love the setting. I just think this looks more like a candid then a modeling shot. That's really my only critique. But as one of the only models who actually took a big chance I think it will pay off again for you. Your chances have consistently kept you in.
Jenna: I think this is excellent, Milla. I love how wild and crazy all the colors are and I love how unique and artsy you look here. The setting really compliments everything very well, and your pose really gives the photo an added punch. Your outfit has pizzazz, and this whole shot just screams art come to life, to me. Outstanding job!
Jensen: very good job. The setting is crazy, your outfit, the layers, and the colours are so 80s throwback and amazing at that. I hate the way your mouth is open though, makes this over all feel uncomfortable, but everything else is completely flawless
Portia: I like this Milla! I do think the background is busy but I agree that it works in this shoot. You have consistently done well in my book and this round you didn't disappoint
Rihanna
Koda: I do love the fashion you're giving us, but there's something really throwing me off here. To me, it looks like you were shopped into the photo. I think it's mainly the shading on you not feeling like the shading in the background. That said, I want to get back to the fashion. It's definitely unconventional. I think it's mainly due to the skirt that reminds me of a contestant on Project Runway who used 3d printing to create accessories for his outfits. You're definitely giving us something interesting to look at here.
Christian: RI RI!
Yes. You are one of a few models that embraced the theme of the shoot. Thank you. I really like this. Why so angry Ri? I really like the outfit a lot and it throws your proportions off a lot which I think is what makes avant garde so fun.
My only nit...I wish the photo was about 100 pixels taller so we could get all your feet in. It really bothers me where it is cropped. Like there's plenty of photo at the top and then it's cut off at the bottom. Boo. But you should be fine.
Jenna: Wow! You are really working it here, Rihanna. I love everything about this photo! Your setting perfectly showcases 'middle of nowhere on the road, meets high fashion'. I like the juxtaposition of that whole element. Your outfit is unconventional, yet has the right amount of over the top components to it. Your pose is commanding and I really enjoy that. Collectively, you are owning it, and I think this is sensational.
Jensen: There's that expression from round 1 that I hated I'm so sorry I don't like your face. I love your pose, but wish you'd do more with that right arm. I love the outfit. Very fitting. I"m not liking the scenery at all. I'm in the middle here but hey, middle is better than bottom <3
Portia: There's aspects I really like about this and some that I don't. Problem is I can't really specify what I don't like. I'm just mixed here. You did hit the theme though so props there!
Let's see how you all did.
Cate
Koda: I told the models not to play it safe and that outfit is anything but safe. I am in love with it.
