Welcome ladies to the fourth round critiques. This was definitely a difficult round to score because we feel that the overall level of competition was pretty high this round, but none-the-less, we still have to let one of you go.
We'll start off by critiquing all of the photos this round.
Uptown Girls
Angelina - The Casanova
Koda: I can see your character here and if I wasn't specifically told which archetype you went with, The Casanova would be my first guess, so you get points for theme. The posing all works except for the hand on your leg and I think that one mainly doesn't work for me because of the tension. I think you did fine with this shot.
Christian: First off, sorry I am late, won't happen again darling.
For a sitcom archetype like Cassanova I guess I didn't expect something so sexy. I consider Joey from Friends the Cassanove archetype and he's not...well he is...anyway. I, again, would have liked to seen a different face from you. Your real challenge is going to be to stop giving AJBF it doesn't work for every theme. And for sitcom, which is comedy even if it is still fashion, I would have liked a smile. Your dress, which looks like just survived an attempted raping is very nice. Again we see why chairs are not the best props for a shot, they always make you look you have weird proportions. Overall this shot was just OK for me. Kisses.
Jenna: I also think you look very sexy and sultry here. I think your expression is very engaging and I think your pose makes your body look nice with the curves it forms. I think it works for the theme, but I feel there is a bit of a pop that I'm missing. Altogether, it's a nice job.
Jensen: Hmmmmm You look sexy. I guess for a sitcom show, this works. I don't like the way you're sitting. You look to be grabbing at your crotch and that's not sexy for me. I do love your eyes and lips here. The dress is nice and sexy. Not great but definitely not bad.
Portia: I think you really hit the casanova theme here. I am going to disagree with the judges, I don't think your hand on the leg is bad at all, I actually think it works. I can see the sexiness in your face and your pose. I'd cheat on Ellen, that's how hot this shot is. But seriously, I think you did well here!
Cate - The Goofball
Koda: If nothing else, I remember this shot. I glanced over everyone's photos last night and coming here to judge this morning, this was one of the few I remembered. You have your theme down 100%, but it's unfortunately come at the expense of the modeling a bit. From a modeling perspective, I'm not a fan of the lines you're giving us with your body, not a fan of your fan here, and not a fan of the production value of the shot. From a character standpoint, I love all of it. For me, it'll be a battle of how to weigh each side this round, but I'd be shocked if you have anything to worry about.
Christian: Sorry for the tardy!
This is my favorite Cate shot so far. You nailed the theme 100% but still did it in a real classy way. Very Cate. As for the modeling, I think its actually very good. Yes you are scrunched up but I still think we can see how beautiful you and the clothes are. And to Hoda Kotb's point, I remember this shot, which is what an ad should do. Your face is a bit Heath Ledge Joker, but I love that it is in the moment. First shot of yours I have really liked.
Jenna: This works very well for your persona. I like how natural you look and that it genuinely looks as if you're having fun. I like your setting too, because it plays well into the description for your character. Nice work.
Jensen: This is good. I like this. It's fun and looks very difficult. It reminds me of something you'd see in the credits of a comedy. Your face is over the top, but I do like this a lot. Good job!
Portia: I like this..you mentioned not showing your "modeling" here but I think the goofball shot SHOULD look like this. It looks very natural and you look very happy here. This reminds me of a picture I would take with my friends when we are goofing off. Well done
Emma - The Stick
Koda: There's a bit of a quality issue here and I am the Quality Police . That said, I do like this shot. You have a stern-enough expression for it to work, but there's still an underlying softness here that goes along well with your character bio. The outfit is simple, but fitting and you have just enough accessorizing. Pretty solid entry.
Christian: Emmsies sorry I am late. Ugh.
OK. I was excited you had The Stick and you mostly did not disappoint. Asian Host is right there is a teensy quality issue and to my highly trained eyes it bugs me a bit. Minor infractions there darling. Now lets talk about your sublime dress. Love. That's how you rock a simple item. Pixie cut? All day yes. I love Emma's pixie cut stuff, so you will always get nods from me on that. I think a few of my other judges have commented on the face - yes I wish it were a bit bitchier. Think Portia in Better Off Ted. But for the most part, not a home run but a solid triple field grounder. SPorts!
Jensen: I do wish there was more bitchatude in your expression, but this is good. I like your pose and your outfit. The plain black makes me think of a stick in the mud lol Good job.
Jenna: This photo has some really great elements to it. I love your short hair, I think it gives a nice versatility to your look. I like how simplistic your outfit and setting are. I think the sly expression you have gives good personality to the shot, and I think this is a great summation of your character.
Portia: Don't make fun of me but I had to google The Stick durrr. But after reading the description I perceive the character as an uptight bitch. I think of that boss, that you hate. And I can see that here. I think the short hair really plays in your favor for this role so I am glad you picked a shot with short hair, and a simple dress and background. You definitely wowed me last week and I think you did well once again, good job Emma
Kirsten - The Precocious
Koda: Definitely a solid representation of The Precocious. I do like how Jenna described this as an unconventional shot and I'd have to agree with her. I do like your playfulness here, but there's also something a little sinister lying underneath your expression, so I like that you saw that and added it to her character. As a matter of fact, I really like your eye in this shot cause you took so much from the photo and added it to your character bio appropriately. It was a very smart execution of your shot. From a visual standpoint, it's not my favorite of the shots this round, but that's partially because I feel this was a very strong round. However, I do think you have one of the smartest tie-ins between shot and bio.
Christian: Sorry I'm late m'lady.
Kirsten I am in the minority on this shot and I am OK with being a minority. Black Power! Good stuff - I do think you did well on the theme. She's definitely precocious. Bad stuff - this looks a bit like a crime scene. Your body is in a very odd shape and position. And I don't feel like you are giving the best face. It kind of looks like you fell from the trapeze and died of shock before you hit the ground. Sorry babe, not my fav.
Jenna: This is very good, Kirsten. I think your setting and styling are excellent and I think you really hit the persona of your character head on here. You look like you're enjoying yourself and there is an innocence to your look, yet a certain kind of alluring aspect, also. Overall, this is very fun and unconventional, and I like it a lot.
Jensen: Wow, this is actually really good. You look childish yet sexy, and like you're having a lot of fun. I love the hula hoop in there as well. Good job!
Portia: I think you definitely look young and quirky here which I really like. Your pose with the hula hoop goes really well with the theme. Something about your eyes is bothering me, maybe it is just me but you kind of look cross eyed. But maybe it is just because you are further from the camera and I just can't see your eyes well. Maybe my eyes just need checked haha who knows. But overall I think this is a step up from last week, good job
Zhang - The Dork
Koda: The quality is a bit off here and it's not just because of the lighting. I uploaded the shot into Photoshop and was able to improve the quality a little bit, but the light washes out part of your face either way. Still, I like your established character here. The awkward posing lends itself well to an awkward Dork. You gave us a setting this round, but I think the setting could have been a bit better for your character. It's a little too dark for my tastes this time. Still, it's a solid photo.
Christian: Kitty sorry I am late and you are my last critique.
Kitty! You did something that made me smile and is totally different. I am so proud. You embodied your challenge very well. Maybe a bit too Asian Mad Men rather than dork, but it still works great. I love the beleaguered look. I too was a little put off by the Slouchy Couchy - that's what we call it in the biz, but it totally works for you here. Quality Police is right - it's not retouched as well as it could be - by me. This is my favorite Kitty Zhang Shanghai - whatever name you are using this week - photo.
Jenna: I feel like this is a side to you we haven't seen before, and I like that. You look very fitting as the dork and I think this whole photo gives off a vibe this works well. I like your setting and I think the odd lighting gives the photo a certain charm that goes with your explanation. I, oddly think your outfit is stylish and think you play your part well. Great work!
Jensen: This is cute lol I like it. You look clumsy and dorky and it works great. The lighting isnt' great though. Making the quality a bit off, but overall, it's really cute.
Portia: At first I didn't like how you were just slouched on the couch but then after staring at it a little longer I think the post actually really works. Dorks never sit properly they usually are very awkward. I love the big glasses, that always gives off a dork vibe. I with agree with some of the other judges that the lighting could have been better but I think you did well here. This is one of your better submissions if you ask me!
Woman's World
Cher - The Sage
Koda: You played to your strengths this round and I think it's going to pay off for you. I easily see The Sage in this shot and when you combine that with your character bio, it makes for a character I want to see more of. While accomplishing your character, you also kept the modeling value in mind. You look great here and I could see this being used as a promotional shot featuring your character on the show. Personally, I think this is your strongest round so far.
Christian: Cher baby...sorry I'm late.
What a treat. You nailed this sugar. Sage - yes. Promo shot - I feel like this is the poster for one of those new TBS style shows like Cougar Town or Hot in Cleveland. Spot on. Fashion - great. I think you look great. You need to teach some of these girls to sit in a chair - because this is how you do it. The only thing I am not a fan of is the bleach blond hair. Had you your normal black, or even greying hair, I would have been OB-SESSED with this photo. You are more than safe this round.
Jenna: I think you look very stylish and chic here. I like that the photo works well with what you're describing and it gives off a vibe that you're well accomplished and you're owning it. You look very business savvy and affluent, and I like how that ties everything together. Great work here, Cher.
Jensen: I really like this. The promotional vibe of the overall photo. How hot you look as the older woman of the show. You look sassy, sexy and ready to take on the world. Good job.
Portia: I am sure you have noticed with my comments, that I haven't been wowed yet by you Cher..but this round that has changed. I really really like this. I think this shot ties in perfectly with your scenario. I can actually picture this has a cast photo. Love it. This is my favorite submission from you thus far
Christina - The Charmer
Koda: I just had flashbacks to Kirsten Week 1. I do like how you're styled here a bit better. I can see The Charmer here, but it could have been a stronger connection. Like Jensen said, a smile would have pulled it together in a stronger manner. I'm also much more fine with studio backgrounds in this shoot just because of what we asked of all of you this round and not having a setting this time probably enhances the feeling of the character we get from you. I do want to say that I love how your hair shines here.
Christian: Sorry for the lateness Xtina - ugh being famous is hard, right?
OK I won't beat this over the head too much. You look Ah-Mazing. It makes me wonder why she doesn't do this shit more in real life. Ugh. Anyway. Honestly I thought the animated gif was your submission at first and I started laughing really hard. Then I saw your photo. I really love it. Great fashion, great pose. Maybe could have been more powerful in color actually. When I think charming I want color for some reason. And yes, Jensen is spot on - you needed to smile for charming - or even just a little smirk. But that's potatoes darling, potatoes. You nailed it.
Jenna: I think this is so elegant and glamorous! You look sexy and I can see where you were going here. You look like the girl everyone wants to be. It's borderline bitchy, but I can see the softness, as well. The styling here is great. Your hair and your outfit are very eye-catching and memorable. Excellent job here, Christina!
Jensen: This photo is fucking gorgeous. Excuse my language. I really like it. I wish we could see that charmer smile though. That's the only thing bringing this down for me. Otherwise, it's a great photo. You're gorgeous! I also like the blank background for you as well.
Portia: I agree with Jensen on this shot. The shot is amazing, you look absolutely stunning! The only thing is when I was reading the description, I kept seeing "smile" and then I didn't see the smile in the shot. When I picture a charmer I picture a girl with a big smile or at least a half of smile but I still really like this photo
Jennifer - The Goofball
Koda: As far as a promotional shot for your character goes, I love this shot. You get all kinds of personality from you and I love the way you're styled. You're dressed well-enough to show off where your character works, but are disheveled enough to show that you're still The Goofball. In a normal shoot, I'd probably hate your expression, but I can't hate it here because of what we asked you to do. This might actually be your strongest submission so far.
Christian: JLAW. Congrats on Oscar nom...and sorry I was late. Bows.
This shot.
So much.
Twirl. It's outstanding. First, Dora Jarre is a brilliant name that nobody has given you credit for yet. I will, its hilarious. Door Ajar people. You get Creativity points for that alone. I love the silliness of this shot and it totally nails the theme. Fashion wise you're a little arms and legs all over the place with fabric weaving in and out but it works for you. And who doesn't love a big Blossom style hat. You'll have to google that because it's before your time.
Jenna: This is very quirky and fun. I like how it's out of the box, but works very well here. I think you look good, I just wish that there was a bit more dimension of color here, because some of it is blending together. Otherwise, I see why you chose this shot and it's a different side to what we've seen of you thus far. Good work, Jennifer.
Jensen: Hahahah, this is funny, and reminds me of a photo of my own lol This is cute and I like it. Wait, is that you? I thought this was Emma Stone for a minute. Wow, you look different lol Anyway, I really like this and it's very fitting.
Portia: Ahhhh I love this! I actually smiled when I saw this. Everything from your facial expression to even your silly outfit, shows your goofiness. I think you fit your character perfectly. Once of my favorites so far!
Milla - The Stick
Koda: Who knew that all black would work so well for The Stick? A lot of the other models this round went with shots that fit their character first and worried about modeling second. I feel like you probably have the strongest modeling this round, but most of the other models have stronger connections to their characters, so it'll be a matter of what the judges hold more important this round. You still match your character, but it's a connection while a lot of other models are embodying their characters. Still, a beautiful shot and I absolutely love what you're wearing.
Christian: Sorry I am late - you understand darling, don't you?
Milla. Milla. Milla. You little stick you. I think you nailed both aspects of this shoot. Character archetype - boy yes. This pose screams "villain/boss"" and the harsh lines and choice of fabric really set the tone nicely. Modeling wise - boy yes. Elegance, sophistication, great body lines and face. Milla after the guitar photo I was worried we had neutered you - but the fierceocity is very much back. See you next Tuesday honey.
Jenna: I love how the professional look that you have going on here fits in perfectly. You look like you don't want to be messed with and you are all business, all the time. I think your pose and expression really helps to sell this. You really did well here, Milla. Everything about this photo works, and I think you live up to your persona.
Jensen: Ohhh like Emma you went with all black and it works great. I also love the body language and your expression is much more stuck up. It's a great photo.
Portia: I will start off by saying that I think I would have liked this shot more if you werent bent over awkwardly. I do however really like the black and white, your facial expression and your outfit. I think you did a pretty good job connecting with your theme, but again not a huge fan of you being bent over like that. This is just okay for me
Rihanna - The Bully
Koda: I normally avoid looking at other shots models are considering cause I don't want to ever say "I like your other shot better" but I like your other shot better. Still, this one works. The styling, especially the eyepatch, adds a harshness to the shot that works with your character. I like that you added the "shh" to your character bio and made it something that could be her thing. Like the other judges, your expression isn't the best for your archetype, but it still works for me and you look good here, too.
Christian: Ri Ri sorry I am late honey.
Whooo girl. Why you gots that eye patch? Someone hit you again?
I kid. Do I?
Hmmm I am not in love with this. I am not sure it screams bully and much as bullied. Usually the bullied is the quiet one but I guess you are menacingly shushing someone. As someone who was bullied I can tell you they are not subtle, and I think this might be too subtle for the subject matter. Also I don't love your hair. For some reason it feels very Photochopped to me. And the only fashion to really judge is the eyepatch. And eyepatches aren't hot right now. Hmm I'm torn like Natalie Imbruglia darling.
Jenna: I love this, Rihanna. I think you look fierce and in charge. I agree that you don't have the best expression to portray bully, but I think your accessories and styling help to make up for it. Your makeup and look as a whole here work very well. This is a very nice photo. Excellent job!
Jensen: Hmmm I'm not sure I get bully from this. I love this photo, but you don't look mean here. I wish there was a bit of meanness to your expression to help sell this. Very gorgeous though.
Portia: I will disagree with some of the other judges, I am really glad you picked this one. I think this completely shows you as a bully. I love the hood, eye patch and "shhh". The best part is while connecting to your theme you also manage to look great. I love your eye make up here. I really like this!!
